Abstract

We describe the experience of building a self-instructional extension course about Heart Failure (HF), focused at Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, demanded by the extension project " Brazilian Heart Insufficiency and Telemedicine" (BRAHIT). It was built a multidisciplinary group of medical students from the Ouro Preto Federal University, local PHC professionals and the information technology team. It was based on the theoretical references of reverse construction, action mapping and in the pedagogical strategy of contextual learning paths, centered on know-how-to-do. The planning strategy involved online meetings, and course’s elaboration and validation processes, which was carried out by reference cardiologists for the telemedicine component of the BRAHIT Project, linked to the National Institute of Cardiology, and by members of Rio de Janeiro Health Department, also a BRAHIT member. In addition to the content, structure and development of navigation patterns of the three units of the course, a decision-making flowchart in HF, as well as a guide for the differential diagnosis between COVID-19 and HF, already in use by Rio de Janeiro health professionals, were prepared and validated, with positive feedback from them. The course points out contextual dilemmas and challenges in the care of patients with HF addressed in PHC, reinforcing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in Permanent Education, which is reflected in this production methodology, which has gained new contours in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, reinforcing the importance of distance education and its potential to provide content adapted to the needs of the learner, especially in the context of PHC.
